Jag har även läst Atheism: A Very Short Introduction av Julian Baggini
Trevlig, även om jag önskar att han vore mer militant. Sista kapitlet är en rätt kul debunking av de "större" gudsbevisen.

En skrämmande skildring av en verklig historia där en familj fullständigt krossas av mediet Lilly Gardeby (i boken kallad Irja Ljusmark) och hennes sekt World Light Center (i boken kallad Ljusets källa i Världen). Gardeby dog 2004 och sekten är nu upplöst. Det är framför allt intressant att läsa hur argumenten för att hänge sig totalt åt en kvinna som kallar sig Guds Moder är precis desamma som dem vi möter i diskussionerna med "moderata" vidskepliga.

Jag såg att man diskuterade kvantmekanik i ngn tråd. Jag har alltid haft svårt för att begripa kvantmekaniken men tyckte att jag begrep den efter att ha läst Lindleys bok.

Lindley, David, Paradoxen som försvann : kvantmekaniken är konstig men inte så konstig som du tror.

American Scientist har en intervju med Frank Wilczek där han rekommenderar böcker:

What science book recommendations do you have for nonscientists?

I think the most interesting science books are the ones by the great scientists themselves. Examples include Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle (1839) and Origin of Species (1859); Watson's Double Helix; Richard Feynman's Character of Physical Law (MIT Press, 1965) and QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter (Princeton University Press, 1985); Steven Weinberg's The First Three Minutes (Basic Books, 1977); and Alan Guth's The Inflationary Universe (Addison-Wesley Publishing, 1997). Isaac Newton's baroque prose is extremely beautiful, I think. There's a nice collection, Newton's Philosophy of Nature, edited by H. S. Thayer (1953). I mentioned one of Weyl's books above; another is Symmetry (1952).

In a category of its own is Richard Rhodes's The Making of the Atomic Bomb (Simon & Schuster, 1986), a magnificent account of that great and terrible scientific/technological achievement.

Name one book in your discipline that you would recommend for scientists outside your field. Explain your choice.

Abraham Pais's Subtle Is the Lord (Oxford University Press, 1982) is a unique biography of Einstein, which goes into considerable depth on his scientific work and its legacy. Pais was quite a distinguished scientist in his own right. It's not for sissies, but you can learn a lot of modern physics from Pais's book, and its narrative exposition has the advantage of emphasizing how people had to struggle to get there.

För att anknyta till föregående post: jag kan också rekommendera Feynmans QED för att läsa om kvantmekanik. Den är inte helt populär utan kräver viss tankeverksamhet, men den är briljant.

"Kritisk utredningsmetodik" av psykologidocenten Bo Edwardsson är en utmärkt genomgång av det flum som präglar socialtjänstens utredningar i Sverige. Man behöver inte vara särskilt intresserad av just socialt arbete för att uppleva boken som högintressant. Jag tror att det är den enda svenskspråkiga bok som belyser pseudovetenskapen inom socialtjänsten. Edwardsson visar att man inom merparten av de utredningar han granskat inte ens behärskar så grundläggande saker som att skilja på observation och tolkning av händelseförlopp under utredningarna. Källkritiken i journalföringarna är för det mesta under all kritik mm. Dessa journaler med osanna uppgifter används senare som beslutsunderlag av bl.a dynamiskt skolade psykologer som applicerar sina pseudovetenskapliga tolkningar på ett redan undermåligt material.
Edwardssons bok har enligt en socionomstudent jag känner slagit ner som en bomb i socionomkretsar. På socialhögskolan örebro ingick den som obligatorisk kurlitteratur sista terminen. Den togs dock bort då högskolan fick klagomål från socialtjänstemän som arbetat tillsammans med nyexade socinomer som läst boken. De ansågs som för jobbiga att arbeta med med sin höga krav på redlighet i utredningarna.
