Given this, it’s less surprising that Sweden’s recent virus performance looks mediocre rather than horrible.

Fast alla har väl förstått att man efter ett tag behöver gå in i en i längden hållbar strategi. Men den måste ju inte implementeras de första veckorna av spridning. En strategi kan ju bestå av två eller fler faser. Ett av huvudargumenten som FoHM har angett till att inte fler restriktioner och striktare rekommendationer infördes i början är ju att det inte är hållbart i längden. Jag förstår inte logiken i det.

Båda har angetts som argument. Bl.a. i den video på engelska jag postat tidigare. Oklart vilket som är primärt men det är iallafall ett av motiven till strategin. Och som sagt, varför skulle det vara fel att införa kortsiktigt hållbara restriktioner under en inledningsfas. Man kan argumentera om det hade varit onödigt eller ej. Men att inte göra det om det behövs för att de inte är långsiktiga köper jag inte. Och om det inte behövs så är det argumentet i sig tillräckligt för att inte införa dem om man kan ge stöd för det.

Och inte heller viktigt för resonemanget. Det har upprepats som ett argument och ett stöd för det svenska inledande strategin väldigt många gånger av både FoHM och av media. Och även i det citat som föranledde min kommentar. Det talas mer om detta argument än om det andra som man aldrig tar upp, vilket är att fler restriktioner hade fått mer negativa hälsoeffekter än epidemin självt (det förekommer i princip bara dessa två argument då det har förnekats kategoriskt att flockimmunitet och/eller ekonomiska kostnader har något med saken att göra). Men det är förståeligt att man undviker att leda in diskussionen på detta ämne eftersom man nog inte kan ge några solida evidens för att det förhåller sig på det viset.

Det ska tilläggas att ett ytterligare argument för att inte göra mer mot spridningen i början av epidemin är det som tagits upp senare i tråden. Nämligen att man inte hade möjlighet att göra det inom lagens ramar fast man egentligen hade velat. Detta har dock aldrig angetts som ett skäl i något officiellt sammanhang vad jag vet. Tvärt om sa man att man kunde ta till vidare åtgärder om det skulle behövas.

Är det inte så att även om flockimmunitet inte varit målet så har man utgått från att virusets spridning i samhället kommer att leda till en viss nivå av immunitet?

Immunity against COVID-19 is not due to just antibodies, but it is known that T cells likely play a large role as well. A recent study from Karolinska Institutet showed that about double the number of people with antibodies had T cell immunity, although much more research is needed to have been done.

Sweden has had a very non-homogeneous spread of the disease with the major epicenter being the capital Stockholm. In late June, about 17.2% of people tested had detectable levels of antibodies in Stockholm in late June. Since antibodies take a few weeks to develop, these reflects infections on or before early June. Since that was two months ago, it is likely that the figure is even higher now. Together with T cell immunity, there appears to be a robust level of immunity in Stockholm.

Jag har förstått att det tar emot för många av er, men när Sveriges dödstal per capita är långt över de övriga nordiska ländernas dödstal så kommer ingen utanför landet att se Sveriges hantering av corona som en framgångssaga. Vilket ju var vad NYT-artikeln sa.

Ta en titt på några andra länders dödstal per capita:

- Finland: 61 per 1 000 000 invånare.

- Norge: 51 per 1 000 000 invånare.

- Australien: 35 per 1 000 000 invånare.

- Sydkorea: 9 per 1 000 000 invånare.

- Nya Zeeland: 5 per 1 000 000 invånare.

- Taiwan: 0,3 per 1 000 000 invånare(!).

Detta är exempel på länder som lyckats hantera pandemin betydligt bättre än Sverige. Med länder som klarat det så bra som dessa, varför skulle någon se ett land med dödstal på 584 per 1 000 000 invånare som ett lyckosamt exempel? I synnerhet när kulturellt närstående länder med liknande samhällssystem som Norge och Finland (och även Danmark och Island) klarat sig så mycket bättre?

Man har varit försiktig med att använda ordet "flockimunitet". Aftonbladet:

Detta är exempel på länder som lyckats hantera pandemin betydligt bättre än Sverige.

Kan man säga att Skånes strategi är mycket bättre än Stockholms strategi, eftersom Skåne haft 200 döda/mn invånare mot Stockholms 1030? Kan man säga att New Yorks strategi, med total lockdown, var mycket sämre än Sveriges eftersom man hade 1700 döda/mn invånare?

I en artikel i tidskriften Time varna Andrew Ewing, som är professorn i biokemi vid Göteborgs universitet och ledamot i Kungliga vetenskapsakademien, andra länder att följa den svenska strategin.
– Jag är uppriktigt oroad över att länder nu anammar den svenska modellen, säger Ewing till Aftonbladet.
I artikeln tar Ewing upp ett amerikansk forskarinitiativ som kallar sig “Great barrington declaration” som förespråkar flockimmunitet.
– Jag är väldigt oroad över detta. Det är en grupp konservativa ekonomer som vill stänga in alla över 60 och låta viruset köra igenom resten av befolkningen. Så kan man inte uppnå flockimmunitet, det gör man via vaccin, säger Andrew Ewing till Aftonbladet.

The article in Time Magazine is excellent:

As of Oct. 13, Sweden’s per capita death rate is 58.4 per 100,000 people, according to Johns Hopkins University data, 12th highest in the world (not including tiny Andorra and San Marino). But perhaps more striking are the findings of a study published Oct. 12 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which pointed out that, of the countries the researchers investigated, Sweden and the U.S. essentially make up a category of two: they are the only countries with high overall mortality rates that have failed to rapidly reduce those numbers as the pandemic has progressed.

Yet the architects of the Swedish plan are selling it as a success to the rest of the world.

I get the impression that most Swedes prefer to be in denial about the disastrous conditions of the Swedish health-care system during the first few months of the outbreak in Sweden, and Tegnell&Giesecke as well as Swedish politicians lie about those conditions when they are talking to foreign-language media, pretending that everything was fine, cf. "selling it as a success to the rest of the world."
In the Time Magazine article, Ewing puts an end to the lie:

However, the high infection rate across the country was the underlying factor that led to a high number of those becoming infected in care homes. Many sick elderly were not seen by a doctor because the country’s hospitals were implementing a triage system that, according to a study published July 1 in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, appeared to have factored in age and predicted prognosis. “This likely reduced [intensive care unit] load at the cost of more high-risk patients”—like elderly people with confirmed infection—dying outside the ICU.” Only 13% of the elderly residents who died with COVID-19 during the spring received hospital care, according to preliminary statistics from the National Board of Health and Welfare released Aug.

Artikeln i Time är i flera stycken vinklad eller felaktig:

- Man har godtyckligt utelämnat Belgien ur listan över länder med höga dödstal för att få det att framstå som Sverige ligger sämre till.

- "Despite this, Sweden’s Public Health Agency director Johan Carlson has claimed that “the Swedish situation remains favorable,” and that the country’s response has been “consistent and sustainable.” The data, however, show that the case rate in Sweden, as elsewhere in Europe, is currently increasing." vilket är vilseledande eftersom en majoritet av länderna i Europa har högre ökning än Sverige just nu, vissa mycket högre.

- "Yet even with this rise in cases, the government is easing the few restrictions it had in place." vilket är direkt felaktigt, eftersom restriktionerna inte lättas.

- "the country never closed daycare or schools for children under the age of 16, and school attendance is mandatory under Swedish law, with no option for distance learning or home schooling, even for family members in high risk groups." vilket är direkt felaktigt.

- "After all, herd immunity to an infectious disease has never been achieved without a vaccine." visar att skribenten saknar grundläggande kunskap om epidemiologi. Det är flockimmunitet som leder till att en epidemi till slut klingar av. Skribenten verkar ha blandat ihop flockimmunitet med att utrota virus, vilket är något annat.

- "Starting April 1, the government restricted visits to retirement homes (which reopened to visitors on Oct. 1 without masks recommended for visitors or staff). " vilket är vilseledande, eftersom lokala och regionala restriktioner infördes före 1 april och fortsätter gälla efter 1 oktober.

-"Meanwhile Sweden built neither the testing nor the contact-tracing capacity that other wealthy European countries did. Until the end of May (and again in August), Sweden tested 20% the number of people per capita compared with Denmark, and less than both Norway and Finland; Sweden has often had among the lowest test rates in Europe. Even with increased testing in the fall, Sweden still only tests only about one-fourth that of Denmark." vilket är vilseledande eftersom det har inte funnits kapacitetsbrist sedan början av sommaren.
